Town of Babylon Outlines Memorial Day Weekend Beach Plans

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Town of Babylon has had to modify its summer plans and programs in order to protect the health of our residents, neighbors and staff. While this summer will certainly be different than years past, the Town of Babylon is determined to do all that it can to make our cherished parks and beaches available for our residents to enjoy this season. The information in this release is subject to change.

Memorial Day Weekend Beach Guide

The Following Applies to Overlook Beach Cedar Beach & Gilgo Beach:

All beaches are 50% Capacity.

All beaches are Town of Babylon resident only: Vehicle Driver must provide a valid driver’s license, with an address in the Town of Babylon, in order to gain entrance to any beach. There will be no fee from May 23 – May 31. Stickers are required beginning June 6.

All Ocean Beaches: May 23 – May 25
TOB Driver’s License: 8 am – 6 pm
Lifeguards on Duty: 10 am – 6 pm

 Residents will only be allowed to wade into the ocean to waist deep.

*Cedar Beach Marina will not be open for bathrooms or vehicles.  

Salt Shack will be open at Overlook Beach & Cedar Beach for take away ONLY. The Gilgo Beach Inn will be open at Gilgo Beach for take away ONLY. All picnic tables have been removed to remain in compliance with NYS rules.

In accordance with current regulations, beach playgrounds are currently closed. Beach sports are also prohibited.

Face coverings are required when walking around the beach. A face covering is not needed when in the ocean or when sitting at your area on the beach.

A face covering is required when interacting with beach staff.

Restrooms will be open 8 am to 8 pm. Shoes and masks are required when using the restroom. Residents must wash hands with soap and water when using the restroom.

Residents must space six feet apart from all groups. Please keep your distance when picking a spot on the sand. Social distancing is very important.

The Following Applies to Tanner Park & Venetian Shores:

Tanner Park & Venetian Shores will be Town of Babylon resident only: Vehicle Driver must provide a valid driver’s license, with an address in the Town of Babylon, in order to gain entrance. There will be no fee from May 23 – May 31. Stickers are required beginning June 27.

Facilities are 50% Capacity. Swimming is prohibited at Tanner Park beach and Venetian Shore beach.

Bay beaches will not have lifeguards on duty until the facility officially opens on June 27.

In accordance with current regulations, playgrounds and fields are currently closed. Beach sports are also prohibited. Tennis courts are open for use. 

Katch will be open at Venetian Shores for take away food ONLY. All picnic tables have been removed to remain in compliance with NYS rules.

Bathrooms will be open at Venetian Shores. Shoes and masks are required when using the restroom. Residents must wash hands with soap and water when using the restroom.

Sully’s Warf at Tanner Park will not be open until June 27.

Parks & Rec Summer Beach Permits
 
Parks & Recreation Summer Beach Permits will go on sale Monday, June 1st at the Phelps Lane pool in North Babylon. Permits will be sold CREDIT CARD ONLY.

As a result of COVID-19, Supervisor Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Martinez and the Town Board have decided to lower the permit fees for this summer. By reducing fees, we are able to give our residents a little relief while also collecting the necessary funding to keep our facilities clean and well-staffed for our visitors.

 Resident Recreation Permits: $35 (normally $45)
 Senior, Volunteer Firefighter and Veteran Recreation Permits: $15 (normally $20)*
 *Volunteer firefighters and Veterans must have a valid ID at time of purchase

Marinas
 
Social distancing required at all times while on-site.
There is no congregating on docks, in parking lots, or boat ramps.
There is no “rafting,” or tying together of boats between different groups for socializing purposes.

Playgrounds

Due to difficulty sanitizing thoroughly and maintaining social distance, all playgrounds will remain closed until further notice.

Pools & Spray Parks
 
Due to health and sanitation concerns, pool facilities or spray parks will be closed until guidance is issued from New York

Concerts & Events
 
All events that were previously scheduled for summer 2020 are postponed until further notice. The Town of Babylon is currently exploring how it can offer our residents the usual seasonal events that they enjoy (concerts, movies, etc.) in way that complies with social distancing and gathering guidelines. We will provide you with updates as we know more.

Day Camps & Programs
 

Due to health and sanitation concerns, summer programs or day camps are postponed until guidance is issued from New York State.
