Supervisor Don Clavin Teams with Bipartisan Committee of LI Supervisors for Joint Planning of Summer Programs and Services During COVID-19 Pandemic

Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin joined with Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and a bipartisan group of Long Island town supervisors to announce a joint planning effort to coordinate the summer season amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.  Clavin, Schaffer and the Supervisors kicked off discussions on how to safely provide summer programs and services, with a special focus on Parks and Recreation Activities.

“The theme of our discussion was that the COVID-19 pandemic does not follow town borders, and it’s necessary to collaborate on our best practices and strategies for summer programs and services,” Clavin said. “Working together as a team and maintaining communication will be key to providing the safest environment for the residents of our townships and across Long Island.”

Key points for the Supervisor’s panel include: coordinated public health messaging, timeline and policies. This includes social distancing guidelines, opening and potential re-closing timelines, working together on beach, park and facility openings and best practices at those locations. Some other items to discuss include the potential of an increase of infections and how the Supervisors would coordinate to ensure one town is not overrun due to a closure by another municipality.

“The uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic requires us to consider all possible scenarios,” Clavin said. “Though we wish that all of our residents can enjoy the summers of the past, we accept that this is a ‘new normal’ at least for this year and that we must carefully and patiently plan as a team. I thank Supervisor Rich Schaffer for leading this effort, and to all of the Supervisors for this unprecedented 13-town collaborative effort.”

The other Supervisors involved in the joint planning effort with Clavin and Schaffer included:, Brookhaven Supervisor Edward Romaine, North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino, East Hampton Supervisor Peter Van Scoyoc, Huntington Supervisor Chad Lupinacci, Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter, Riverhead Supervisor Yvette Aguiar, Shelter Island Supervisor Gerard Siller, Smithtown Supervisor Edward Wehrheim, Southampton Supervisor Jay Schneiderman and Southhold Supervisor Scott Russell.
