Longwood High School Students Take Top Honors in Science Olympiad Competition

Four Longwood High School students, Kailyn Penney, Jason Rosales, Jordan Rosales, and Pola Urmansi, demonstrated their expertise in higher-thinking scientific topics by earning top honors at the Eastern Suffolk Regional Science Olympiad Tournament.

Held on Saturday, February 1, at Hauppauge High School, teams of 15 students compete in 18 different STEM-related events, including knowledge of genetics, designing computer games, and building an efficient solar collection device.

Under the guidance of Science Research teachers Dr. Lucinda Hemmick and Dr. Troy Joseph, four students earned medals in three different events. Jason and Jordan Rosales received medals in the category of Ornithology and Green Generation, and Kailyn Penney and Pola Urmanski won medals in Solar Power.

The Eastern Suffolk Regional tournament is the largest in the state, with close to 60 teams competing.
