Four-wheel drive vehicle permits available for purchase through March 31
The Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) today announced that Gilgo State Park will reopen to permitted four-wheel drive vehicles on April 1. Gilgo has been closed to off-road vehicles for the past three seasons due to erosion. Dredging of the Fire Island inlet and sand replenishment project has provided adequate space/sand to resume fishing and surfacing activity on the beach.
The following permits are required to access this 4-wheel drive State Park.
Four-Wheel Drive Beach Vehicle Fishing Permit
Fee of $80.00 ($125 out of state), vehicle registration, driver’s license and DEC Marine registry is required.
The permit is valid 24 hours daily April 1-December 31.
Four-Wheel Drive Beach Vehicle Surfing Permit
Fee of $80.00 ($125 out of state), vehicle registration and driver’s license is required.
The permit is valid year-round for daylight surfing and windsurfing.
Permits are sold up until March 31. Both permits are not available for sale during the summer months but sales resume the Tuesday after Labor Day until December 31. Permits are available at Long Island State Park Regional Headquarters in Babylon – Permit Office (not open weekends – however the office will be open on March 31), Montauk Downs, Jones Beach, Sunken Meadow and Robert Moses State Parks.
